About Our Flexbooks

Unlike traditional textbooks that primarily offer content, our Flexbooks integrate educational content from a textbook format with practical exercises from a workbook format. The idea is to provide theory and practice side by side. This interactive design ensures that students can immediately apply what they’ve learned, enhancing understanding and retention.

Since students will write directly in their Flexbook, you should order one per student. We offer major discounts for 5-book Group Packs and 20-book Class Packs. We also have a digital copy available, which includes a single-year, single-school license.

Flexbooks offer a unique blend of theory and practice, which is critical in fields like speech and debate. The textbook component provides in-depth knowledge about various topics, techniques, and strategies in speech and debate, while the workbook component offers practical activities and exercises for students to apply this knowledge. This integrated approach helps students develop strong, practical skills alongside a solid theoretical foundation.

Flexbooks are versatile and can be used for both self-study and as a part of a structured course. For self-learners, Flexbooks provide comprehensive content and exercises to work through at your own pace. For educators, they can serve as an effective teaching tool, offering structured content and activities that complement classroom instruction.

The workbook sections of the Flexbooks provide interactive exercises and activities designed to reinforce the concepts presented in the textbook portion. These activities allow students to put their knowledge into practice, strengthening their understanding and mastery of the material. The practical exercises also help students develop critical skills needed in speech and debate, such as critical thinking, argument construction, and effective communication.

Content and Curriculum

Students in different grades require different levels of detail, types of examples, and approaches to learning new information. Our books are written specifically to appeal to students within certain grade levels. The content is fundamentally different, although books on similar subjects accomplish the same goals. We recommend ordering books appropriate for the grade level of your students.

We plan to release a new edition of each Flexbook on a yearly basis with updated content, additional activities, and more! In the meantime, we release new free resources very frequently. Check our Resources Page to see what’s new!

Champion Press was founded by four long-time educators who wanted to expand access to high-quality speech and debate education. Each of our Flexbooks is authored by a large team of nationally renowned speech and debate teachers with more than 100 years of combined classroom experience. You can read more about our team here!

Yes! We have a ton of free resources available on our Resources Page! Our curriculum directors and authors make frequent additions to this page with new teaching materials, student guides, parent resources, and more.

The First Editions of Champion’s Guide to Debate, the Competitive Series Public Forum book, and the Foundations of Debate book use the topic, “Resolved: Compulsory voting should be implemented in the United States.”

For Schools

Our Flexbooks are meant to be an all-in-one guide for students new to speech and debate. Teachers use the books in a variety of ways. Most use the books as the main textbook for their Debate I classes, but some use it as supplemental material for after-school programs to help students jumpstart their understanding of speech and debate. It’s up to you!

The Competitive Series includes one event per book, allowing our authors to dive deeper into advanced strategies and complex content suitable for older students. The Foundations Series has multiple events per book and provides more detail about basic speech and debate skills that is age-appropriate for Grades 5-8, but does not go as deep into advanced strategies as the Competitive Series.
